The Back to School Committee has met twice since last season’s giveaway of filled backpacks for Marietta City School students. We work in conjunction with Community Action to find the students who qualify under the federal guidelines. Community Action provides supplies for the Washington County schools students and we cover Marietta City. Applications are taken at the Community Action offices on Putnam Street during July, and we help with this process. The last few years we seem to have leveled off at about 170 students needing school supplies and backpacks.
Last year it cost us about $3200 to buy needed supplies and backpacks. We did not receive much assistance from our other usual sources and we have a little less than $1700 in the fund at this time. In January we contacted churches in Marietta, and so far we have received a minimal response. We also applied for money through the Marietta Community Foundation, but did not receive money in their first round of grants this year, although we can apply again before we have to buy supplies. We hope to have a grant from Thrivent, but we can’t apply for that till a little later this year.
The bottom line is that we need money. We stopped doing the spaghetti dinner because the response kept getting smaller and smaller each year. We would take any donation that you can afford to give. Checks can be made out to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church so that you can receive credit on your giving statement for the donation. Just make sure to indicate “Back to School” on the check.
We could also use more committee members. We have the procedures worked out well since we’ve been doing this for some time, so we don’t have a large number of meetings, but we do meet more often in the summer months to set times to work at Community Action and to shop for supplies. If you are interested in working with us, call Joye Smolenski, 350-0861 or 376-0677, or Pat Hanf, 373-5541.
We will also be asking for help putting the supplies in the backpacks and distributing them in August right before the new school year starts.
We will appreciate any help that you can give us, either in time or money.
